DIY patio cover kits allow you to add a covered patio to your home without the expense of hiring a contractor to install it for you. A do it yourself kit still offers the flexibility and options that you need to customize the cover to your tastes and to your home's technical specifications.

Cover kits are offered in nearly all of the same materials that traditional covers come in, including aluminum, canvas, vinyl, and newer synthetic materials such as alumawood. For most people, flexibility and finding a kit to match personal tastes should not be an issue.

In choosing the right cover for your home, two major factors should be considered. The first factor is simply your personal tastes and what you think looks best with your home. The second major factor to consider is the dimensions and specifications of your home and patio.

When choosing your kit, the first thing you will need to do is take accurate measurements of your home and the patio area you want covered.  These specifications will play in important role in finding the right cover kit for you.

Patio cover kits come in pre-made, standard sizes which will be the cheapest option, or in partly customizable packages that will cost a bit more but will be more tailor made for your home.  If you have simple needs that can be met, then a standard kit may work for you.  However, if your home's specs require any adjustments, it will be well worth it to spend the extra money for a customized kit.

The next major decision will be what type of material you would like your patio cover to consist of.  An option like aluminum is cheap and durable, but many people do not like the look of it.  Many people prefer synthetic materials such as alumawood, although these options tend to be a bit costlier.  However, it is important to weigh the effects of cutting corners and saving money initially versus your satisfaction and the maintenance expenses that could occur in the long run. 

Finally, you should determine how you would like your cover to attach to your home.  Many kits can attach to a wall, to a rooftop, or to or under your roof eave.  You could also have a freestanding patio cover which would stand on posts arising from the ground.  A freestanding cover is generally the most difficult to install and is also usually the most expensive option.

A patio cover kit will require some installation on your part.  If you are fairly comfortable with DIY home improvement projects, then most covers should not be much of a problem for you to install.  Most manufacturers will offer support to their customers as well, so be sure to choose a reputable company to buy your cover kit from.
